In some certain cases you might use an axle that is longer than the width of the trailer frame, such as if larger fenders or other structures cover that extra axle length. But usually you will want the axle length to be a closer fit. The axle spring seats may not be in the right places on the axle beam if the trailer is much less wide.

Matching an axle's weight rating for the gross trailer weight is critical to ensure the axle is not overloaded.

On the linked page you can see both beam axle kits and also the Timbren axle-less suspensions like # A35RS545E. These weld or bolt on to the trailer frame and allow you to have excellent ground clearance since there is no need for leaf springs or other traditional suspension components.
