Recommended Trunk-Mounted Bike Rack for 2009 Volvo XC60 and 2016 BMW 330i

Question:

Can the Hollywood F2 Over-the Top be used on a sedan? Would like one that can be used between a Volvo XC60 and 2016 BMW 330 Sedan. Also looking at the Yakima fullback. I see the straps rest against the spoiler. Will this cause any damage to the spoiler? The Yakima appears to be compatible with the XC60. Thanks

I spoke with my contact at Hollywood Racks regarding the Over-the-Top Bike Rack # HRF2-3 that you referenced. He stated that while this is a confirmed fit for your BMW 330i Sedan, it actually will not work on your 2009 Volvo XC60. This is simply because of the rear design on the vehicle, as it will not allow for a solid attachment point for the upper frame and straps.

For a trunk-mounted rack that is confirmed to fit both your Volvo XC60 and BMW 330i, I instead recommend the Yakima FullBack 3 Bike Rack # Y02633 that you also mentioned. This 3-bike carrier features anti-sway cradles with ratcheting straps to hold the bikes at 3 different points. It does also have a base that can be adjusted to fit over the spoiler, so while the straps might make contact with the rear spoiler on your vehicle, it will not cause too much stress as to damage it when the bikes are loaded. A bike and rack lock are also included to help secure everything into place and deter theft.

I have attached a video demonstration on this carrier so you can get a closer look at all of its features and how it installs.

For any hanging-style rack like this one, you may also need an adapter bar like the Kuat # UB01 if you plan on transporting any children's, woman's, or alternative frame bikes. This will provide a horizontal attachment point for level transport and improved ground clearance. I have attached a short video demonstration on this product so you can see exactly how it works and why it might be needed.
