Troubleshooting Trailer Brakes Not Working When Using Wiring Adapter

Question:

I installed a Reese pod brake controller... It flashes red with no trailer when I apply the brakes, but when I hook the trailer up the light stays red and never turns green... What could be my problem... I used an adapter and matched the colors the same any help we be greatly appreciated

Sometimes a trailer wiring adapter can change the pin/function assignments for some circuits. Wire colors are not a reliable method for wiring a trailer since there is no guarantee that the typical color-to-function assignments have been followed.

This is why, as an example, the Hopkins 7-Way to 6-Way Adapter # HM47570 offers the ability to change the function assignment. 6-way round wiring setups can be configured with the brake circuit or the 12V power circuit on the center pin. Please refer to the linked article and photo for help.
