What you'll need to activate trailer brakes with your 2014 Ford Explorer will depend on what you have equipped on your vehicle. All variants of the Explorer have either no factory package, a factory 4-pole or a factory 7-way. This will determine exactly what you need to install the brake controller.
For any of them, I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Brake Controller, part # 90195. This controller has an easy install, and uses proportional control to apply a relative amount of force to the trailer brakes immediately for better control and performance.
If you have a Factory installed 7-way, you're already all set to go, and will want to purchase the Tekonsha P3 Brake Controller Kit, part # 90195 and its factory harness, part # 3035-P. This includes a wiring harness that plugs into your vehicle's factory cables and uses the existing port to control the brakes.
If you have a Factory 4-Pole connector installed, then you'll need to install a 7-way with part # ETBC7 and the P3 itself, part # 90195. This will mount to your hitch and use your existing 4-pole to upgrade to a 7-way trailer plug and connect to the brake controller.
Finally, if you have no plug at all, then you'll need a 4-Pole, part # 118540, a 7-way kit, part # ETBC7 and the P3 Brake Controller, part # 90195. This will install a complete trailer wiring system into the vehicle.
I've included a video that shows the installation of the 4-pole onto a 2014 Ford Explorer, and the ETBC7 kit onto a 1996 Ford Explorer so you can get familiar with the installation process.
