Is a Tow Bar Based Off of Curb Weight or Gross Vehicle Weight GVW

Question:

I have a Falcon 2 tow bar rated at 6,000 lbs. Used with my 2012 Jeep. My 2018 Dodge Ram 1500 longhorn 4x4 curb weight is 5,469. Can I still use my Falcon 2 tow bar? If so, what base plate will I need? Thanks

The weight capacity of a tow bar will need to be based off of the gross vehicle weight (GVW) of your 2018 Ram 1500 Longhorn not the curb weight. Curb weight does not include any additional cargo or fluids present in the vehicle. What you will want to do to ensure you are within the weight capacity of the tow bar would be to load the vehicle up as you intend to tow it and take it to a commercial truck scale to have it weighed.

If the GVW of your truck does not exceed the 6,000 lb capacity of the Roadmaster Falcon 2 Tow Bar part # RM-520 then it will work well for you. For a base plate kit that will work with the tow bar and your Ram, I recommend using the Roadmaster EZ Base Plate Kit part # RM-52289-4. I have attached a photo of this base plate kit installed an a similar Ram for you so you can see how it will look.

If the GVW of your Ram exceeds the 6,000 lb weight capacity of the Falcon 2, I recommend using the Roadmaster BlackHawk 2 part # RM-422 which has a weight capacity up to 10,000 lbs and would be better suited for your Ram. I have attached a review video of this tow bar for you as well.
