Parts Needed to Flat Tow 2017 or 2018 Ford Fusion Hybrid

Question:

What is your recommendation for towing Ford Fusion Hybrid 2017 or 2018 with my Thor ACE 29.4. I am a newbie and want the easiest to hook-up and un-hook.

To flat tow your 2017 or 2018 Ford Fusion Hybrid (Energi or not) you're going to need a tow bar, base plates, wiring for the lights, a supplemental braking system for the brakes, and possibly a high-low adapter.

The most popular base plates for your car are the # BLU44FR. The kit includes all the necessary hardware for installation and there is no welding required. I've linked the install details for you.

A tow bar to fit this kit that works great and includes safety cables is the Blue Ox # BX7380.

Your Hybrid uses variable voltage taillights. This means for a lighting kit you'll need to use magnetic tow lights. I suggest the Optronics # TL21RK. They connect to a 4-way trailer connector on the back of your RV and then mount to the Focus using heavy-duty magnets. These are very easy to install and don't splice into the car's wiring at all.

For a supplemental braking system the SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO # SM99251 is a favorite around here because of how reliable it is and it's easier to install than many other permanently installed systems.

Finally, you'll likely need a high-low adapter. I've attached an article to help you determine the correct rise or drop your setup requires. I've also linked our selection of adapters for you to look at once you know what you need.

In addition to my recommendations I've linked some articles on flat towing that you may find helpful.

Does Roadmaster have the part needed? What about the steering wheel, is it locked like when the car is turn off or is there something that needed to be done to it?

Roadmaster does indeed have a base plate kit for your Ford Fusion Hybrid with part # RM-524458-4. You'll just want to check your copy of the vehicle's owner's manual for instructions on how to keep the steering unlocked during travel.
