For your 5-1/2 foot bed 2018 Chevy Silverado 1500 you are correct that a Sidewinder is going to be necessary in order to use a fifth wheel hitch. A Sidewinder is going to replace the pin box on your fifth wheel trailer so you will need to find one that is compatible; for example the # RP34FR is designed for Fabex 663, Fabex 665, Lippert 0719, Lippert 1621, Lippert 1621HD, M and M 663, and M and M 665 pin boxes. I have added a link below to our page with our selection of Sidewinders for you to take a look at so you can find the model that works for you.
You will also need a fifth wheel hitch that is compatible with a Sidewinder. I recommend the Reese # RP30928 which you can mount on the Custom Install Base Rails # RP50064-58; these rails are going to make installation easier than universal rails and reduce the amount of drilling you will need to do. You'll also need Wedge Kit # RP44FR to prevent the king pin from pivoting in the jaws of the hitch. For a wiring harness I recommend the Bargman # 50-97-410.
The Reese M5 20 uses a single-jaw system for optimal contact with the king pin, has a 9" wide funnel and 4-way pivoting head to make hooking up your trailer an easier process, and has a 1" offset design to give you a bit of extra clearance room.
