Can Additional Height be Added between Fifth Wheel Trailer Overhang and Truck Bed Rails

Question:

How can I make the fifthwheel higher? It seems like its only about 6 inches between and when turning onto a uneven surface it almost hit the top of the truck bed.

Expert Reply:

6 inches between the top of the truck bed rails and the trailer overhang is considered to be the minimum safe distance. Basically you want to have at least 6 inches there but you also need to tow the trailer level.

If you can add more clearance while still allowing the trailer to be towed level there are two ways to do this. Easiest and most common way is to raise the height setting of the fifth wheel hitch you are using. Typically they are height adjustable and as long as the hitch isn't already using the highest setting you can go higher there.

Or you can lower the pin box in the mounting holes that are used to attach it to the trailer frame. That adds more height to the trailer when you are towing.
