How To Determine if Vehicle Needs Brake Light Relay when Installing Tow Bar Lighting Kit HM56202
Question:
I have a 2005 Jeep Wrangler that I am rigging to flat tow behind my motor home. I plan on using the HM56202 wiring kit for my brake/tail lights. I have a Ready Brute tow bar which uses a surge type supplement brake that activates the towed vehicle brake petal when the motor home brakes are applied. Do I need a brake relay installed on this setup?

Expert Reply:
Most likely yes, but here's how you check to find out if you need the Brake Light Relay part # RM-88400 with the Hopkins tow bar lighting kit part # HM56202.
With your vehicle key in the off position press the brake pedal. If the brake lights come on then you need the relay. If not you don't need it.
