Recommended Trailer Brake Controller and Plug-In Harness for 2005 Chevy Silverado

Question:

Hi I just got a new trailer with brakes . I am installing a 7 way flat connector . There is a blue wire at the rear harness that has no power to it . Do I need a brake controller pigtail to plug in under the dash to energize the blue wire and help control the brake power level ? I see a spot there under dash near brake pedal labeled brakes 6 way. The truck never had a factory 7 pin like pick ups do I think that heavy blue wire was put in the harness at the factory for future use w a brake controller Can you advise me Thanks

Your 2005 Silverado 3500, even if it did not have a factory 7-Way installed, does indeed have a built-in port under the dash that allows for easy installation of a trailer brake controller. The plug that you found is exactly what you thought it was. You will need both the wiring harness and a trailer brake controller in order to activate your new trailer's brakes.

To install a trailer brake controller, such as the excellent Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195, you will just need the Plug-In Adapter # 3015-P. One end of the adapter will plug into the controller itself and the other end will connect to the built-in port in question under your Silverado's dash.

The Prodigy P3 Controller is an excellent, proportional controller that will activate the trailer's brakes at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them in your Silverado.
