What Information is Needed to Add Brakes to a Trailer
Question:
Hello, id like to do the following to my tandem trailer: -Convert From the old wheel style to a wheel with Lugs and lug nuts. -Add trailer breaks to the front axle that does not have the mounting flange or breaks. Id like to know what measurements i need to give you in order to determine if this is possible and how to do it. Thank you very much!

To add brakes to the front axle on your trailer I would need to know the weight capacity of your axle (which can be found stamped on the axle if you don't know it off-hand), as well as the part numbers of your Inner and Outer Bearings and you Grease Seal on your idler hub. The bolt pattern of your hub and size of your tire/wheel would be helpful as well.
If you cannot find the part numbers on your bearings or seal then you can measure the B, C, and D locations on your spindle (see attached picture). You will want to use a digital caliper and measure to the 3rd decimal place as it needs to be very accurate.
Since you don't have a brake mounting flange already I would need to know the diameter of your axle so that I can recommend the correct part for your application.
If you want to go with hydraulic brakes you will need to make sure you have a surge brake coupler on your trailer. Otherwise for electric brakes you would need a brake controller in your tow vehicle.
Let me know what you find and I can help you get the correct parts ordered.
