Fastway Weight Distribution for a 5,500 Pound Loaded Horse Trailer

Question:

I have a 2018 Nissan Armada. Tow capacity of the vehicle is 8,500 lbs. with a maximum TW of 850 lbs. I also have an electronic brake controller installed and would like to back up without detaching the weight distribution system. I am looking at purchasing this system. The trailer is a Featherlight 2 horse trailer with storage/dressing room in the front. The weight of the trailer is 3,000 lbs unloaded. Once fully loaded with equipment and horses the total weight will be approx. 5,500 lbs. I would estimate the TW to be between 600-800 lbs, due to some of the tack/equipment being stored in the dressing area that is forward of the trailer axle. I have a few questions. If you look at the pictures I attached the front A frame portion of my trailer is enclosed. It appears as though I am going to have to cut slots in it in order to attach the L brackets. Im not sure if there is another option? Also, on occasion, we tow just the trailer with no horses. In these instances is it okay to simply detach the weight distribution bars and run it without them so the weight isnt over distributed? Lastly, I need to lower the hitch about 7-8 inches to match the height of the trailer coupling point. I was going to purchase this replacement shank FA92-02-4315 in order to get my desired drop. I appreciate any assistance and insight you can provide.

To use the Fastway e2 system # FA94-00-1061 on your trailer you would need to cut slots to accommodate the frame brackets for the system. The center of the brackets can be 24 to 27 inches back from the center of the coupler ball cavity so check in that general area on the frame.

The only other option would be a different type of system that would require drilling holes through the side of the frame rails which to me is more intrusive than a couple of slots for the Fastway brackets.

When you are towing the trailer empty you can remove the spring bars and tow the trailer with the rest of the system in place.

Shank # FA92-02-4315 is compatible with the Fastway system. It provides a maximum drop of 8 inches. I have linked videos of it and the Fastway system. I have also included some links on weight distribution and determining tongue weight for you.
