We have found that the 2017 Ford Explorer, even with the factory tow package and 7-Way connector, does not feature a built-in brake controller port on the vehicle. There is not a plug-in harness available for the Explorer, so the brake controller will simply need to be hardwired. You can use the Wiring Kit # 5506, which includes 25 feet of duplex wire and the needed circuit breakers.
If you do not yet have a brake controller, I highly recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. This is an excellent, proportional controller that will activate the trailer brakes at the same time and with the same intensity that you apply to them in your vehicle. It features an easy to read digital display, along with continuous diagnostics that will alert you to any potential issues. This unit is well known for its reliability and ease of use.
I have attached the written installation details for the controller that you can also take a look at.
