Why are Curt and Reese Fifth Wheel Rail Kits for 2017 GMC Sierra 2500 in Different Bed Locations

Question:

Ive noticed that the install directions for the curt 16411-204 kit sets the hitch 1.5 inches forward the axle. The reese rp 50066-58 sets the hitch on center of the axle. Why the dif? I am installing a Reese 16t hitch in my 2017 gmc. but I prefer the curt kit,

Expert Reply:

The center of a fifth wheel hitch jaw needs to be either directly above the axle center or slightly forward. So either kit still works fine. Having the jaw center slightly forward of the axle helps distribute a small portion of the trailer weight to the front axle as well, but you have to be careful not to go too far forward as that reduces clearance between the cab of the truck and the nose of the trailer. So that's why typically right over the rear axle is used. You don't want to load behind the rear axle as that unloads the front axle slightly.
