When using 5th wheel installation kit, # RP50140-58, the king pin will be centered over the rear axle, so that 36 inch measurement you provide is correct. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you to view.
In order to determine how much clearance you will have or need, there is a simple formula. First, you take the 36 inches and subtract from that half the width of the 5th wheel overhang, in this case we will say it is 49 inches. So 36 minus 49 equals -13. You need a positive 4 inches of clearance to safely make 90 degree turns.
Since a slider hitch will at most travel 12 inches, there still will not be enough clearance. Instead of a slider, you will need to use a standard 5th wheel hitch and a Sidewinder on the trailer. In order to determine if there is a Sidewinder that will fit your 2011 Sierra, you will need to retrieve the pin box manufacturer and model number off of the pin box.
You can then see if there is a Sidewinder that will fit by looking at our Sidewinder main page, linked for you to view. We have Sidewinders available for numerous models of Fabex, Leland, Lippert, M and M, RBW, Venture, and Youngs Welding pin boxes.
