Recommendation for an Economical 2 Inch Hitch Bike Rack for Carrying 4 Bikes On a 2011 Honda Pilot

Question:

I am looking for a hitch mounted bike rack for a 2011 honda pilot - has a class 3, 2 inch hitch. Need to carry 4 bikes. 2 adults - male and female bikes, 2 kids bikes. 1 bike still has training wheels that will be on for another year. I dont want to break the bank on this purchase. What are your recommendations?

We have several economical options for carrying 4 bikes in the Class 3 hitch on your 2011 Honda Pilot.

For my money, the best rack would be the Thule Hitching Post Pro, # TH934XTR, that you referred to would be a good choice. It also tilts away from the vehicle for access to the back, and it does have anti-sway cradles.

Finally, take a look at the Swagman Trailhead, # S63380, this rack features anti-sway cradles, tilts away from the vehicle for access, and the arms fold down for compact storage.

One of these racks should suit your needs, I have attached a couple of videos that may help with your decision. One thing to remember when using a 4 Bike Carrier, you should load the bikes that are heaviest closer to the vehicle and keep your lighter bikes out farther. This will put less stress on the bike rack, hitch and vehicle frame.

You will also need a bike adapter bar for each bike that does not have a top bar that will allow the bike to be carried level. The Thule Bike Adapter Bar, # TH982XT, would be a good choice, or the Yakima Tube Top Bike Adapter Bar, # Y02531, if you want to stay with the same manufacturer and go with the BigHorn rack.

When carrying the bike with training wheels, you may need to remove the training wheel on one side, if feasible, or at the least make sure the location of that bike is the last one mounted and that the training wheel closest to the bike next to it will not damage the bike.
