If your Reese Pilot Trailer Brake Controller like the Pilot 2-6 # 80550 is showing a trailer connection without a trailer, it is very likely that there is some corrosion or debris inside your vehicle side connector. Take a look at the connector and look for any corrosion, specifically in and around the pin at the 5 o'clock position and clean as needed. This is a fairly common issue as corrosion build-up on the connector can cause a slight short that basically makes the controller think there is a connection to a trailer.
If this does not resolve the issue, please let me know and I will be happy to look into this further.
