Are the Wheel Cradles and Upright Post on the Swagman Chinook Removable

Question:

I am considering a Chinook. I have a 2017 Subaru Forester with the electronic tailgate. I usually have only 1 bike. I would like to know if I can remove the top tube hold down on either of these racks, plus the outside bar and wheel holder to allow the bike rack to tilt up and clear the tailgate. A mistake on pushing the inside tailgate release when the rack is tilted could damage the tailgate. I am hoping to avoid that. Thanks

The upright post and wheel cradles on the Swagman Chinook part # S64683 are removable. However, whenever using a bike carrier it is always recommended to place the bike on the first available spot closest to the vehicle. The liftgate on your 2017 Subaru Forester more than likely has a built-in sensor that will not allow the hatch to open/close if an object is in the way.
