Using a Thule T2 Bike Rack Behind a Travel Trailer

Question:

The Thule T2 4 bike hitch rack says its not approved for RVs or travel trailers. Why is that? I have a travel trailer and I attached a 2inch by 2inch receiver to the metal rear bumper for a bike rack.

Whether or not a bike rack is able to be used behind an RV or trailer is determined by a manufacturer. RV and trailer compatible bike racks tend to be more compact, and made of stronger components than traditional racks to help deal with the increased amount of force that the location of the hitch on a travel trailer in relation to its rear axle applies to the rack. Thule doesn't recommend any of their bike racks be used behind RVs or trailers.

Generally, RV compatible racks are either two bike platform racks or 4 or 5 bike hanging racks. I've linked to all of the racks that are compatible with RVs below, but for 4 bike racks I have a couple of racks that I think will fit your needs.

I recommend either the Let's Go Aero Bike Wing T4, part # B01458 or the Yakima LongHaul, part # Y02476. These racks are great choices that will carry 4 bikes and are approved for behind trailer use.

The Let's Go Aero Bike Wing is a specialized hanging rack that suspends bikes by their wheels, rather than their frames, letting you have a lot more freedom in how a bike is mounted. Each position can be individually adjusted for each bike's wheels, lending a semi-custom fit. The BikeWing T4 doesn't include any locking options, so you'll need to add a cable lock like part # e98891 to secure the bikes to the rack, and a hitch lock like part # SHP2082 for better security.

The Yakima LongHaul on the other hand is a traditional hanging rack that lets you carry bikes a little higher off the ground than the Bike Wing. The LongHaul includes integrated bike and hitch locks. It uses SuperCush anti-sway cradles to help the bikes remain in place while you drive, and reduce the risk of them impacting each other. With a hanging rack, if you have alternative frame bikes, you'll need to use a frame adapter bar like part # 64005 to help these bikes ride level.

I've included a video review of both racks so you can get an idea of how they perform and compare in action.
