I checked with the instructions of the Tekonsha P3 Proportional Brake Controller # 90195 and the possible causes for the lack of a trailer connection are following:
1. Trailer not connected to tow vehicle. Try wiggling the trailer connector to make sure that it is seated all the way into the vehicle connector.
2. Trailer connected with open circuit on the brake line. Check the wiring of the brake output circuit on both your 2008 Ford Expedition and your trailer. If you find loose wiring or corrosion fix as necessary.
3. Trailer connector disconnected or corroded. I would check the trailer and vehicle connectors for corrosion or loose wiring.
4. Loose trailer brake magnet ground. Check the wiring of the brake magnet on your hubs for corrosion or loose wiring.
If none of these things fix the problem you could try disconnecting the brake controller and letting it reset itself.
If you are using a 6 way connector sometimes they are wired differently, you will need to check to make sure that both of the connector are wire the same. This could also be true if you have a 7-way, but it is not as likely.
Lastly, if nothing fixes it then the controller might be bad.
I attached installation instructions for this brake controller as well as some helpful FAQ articles for you to check out also.
