How to Charge a 12 Volt Auxiliary Battery for a Winch on a Trailer

Question:

Im getting ready to install a Badland winch on my 20foot auto hauler. My question is this: Since my vehicle and trailer both have the 7-pin connector could I use the auxiliary 12v+ wire from my 7-pin connector to charge an auxiliary 12 volt battery I will be installing with my winch, it will be installed in a recessed weather sealed box at the tongue of the trailer. Its a 10 awg wire feeding the connector. My towing vehicle is a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 LS and it came with the 7-pin connector and towing package factory installed.

The 7-way trailer connector on your tow vehicle/trailer can be used to maintain a charge on your 12 volt auxiliary battery but will not be powerful enough to charge the battery. Instead, I recommend using a battery charger like the Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger # 331-BCDC1225D which will take power from the vehicle's alternator and use this to charge the auxiliary battery for your winch. Since most winches require a significant amount of power to operate, this will be your best option.

I have attached a review video of the battery charger in addition to a help article that demonstrates how to wire an electric winch for you as well.
