How to Choose the Correct Weight Distribution System for 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser
Question:
Hi, I have a 3500lb camper that Im looking to get some WD/sway control for. the price for the Fastway 6000 lb and 8000 lb units are the same. Is there any drawbacks to selecting the standard duty 8000 lb unit over the light duty 6000 lb unit when towing a relatively light camper? I'm towing with a suspension modified lifted fj cruiser and experience a lot of sway. The rear end drops 3+ inches when the camper is attached and the front wheels look like they want to come off the ground. thanks

There are going to be drawbacks in selecting the wrong weight distribution system unit; and the measurement that matters is tongue weight instead of total capacity. The Fastway # FA92-00-0600 may work for you, but in order to choose the best weight distribution system, you will first need to know your total tongue weight (TTW), which is the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to go trailer plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser.
To determine your trailer's loaded tongue weight you can use a scale such as the etrailer # e99044 or by using one of the methods outlined in the help article on determining tongue weight I've linked for you. From there, simply add on the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your vehicle and you'll have your TTW. The ideal system would be one in which your TTW would fall somewhere in the middle of the weight distribution system's tongue weight capacity. Choosing the wrong system will lead to one that is either ineffective or causes your trailer to bounce and the ride to be stiff.
If your front wheels look like they want to come off the ground, a weight distribution system is something you will want to invest in to keep your vehicles in good condition and more importantly keep yourself and others safe as you travel. I've attached a link to our selection of weight distribution systems for you to take a look at.
