How to Select Trailer Weight Distribution System Based on Trailer Loaded Tongue Weight

Question:

I purchased a pro series RB3 WD system 10,000 lb trailer weight. 1,000 TW. from e-trailer. My trailer weighs loaded 7200 lbs. TW is 980lbs. Tow vehical is a 2017 Ford F-150 3.5 eco boost engine with Max towing. Is this WD system enough for towing my trailer?

Weight distribution systems are sensitive to the actual tongue weight (TW) load on them. We offer a handy scale # e99044 that takes the guesswork out of determining your loaded trailer TW.

The TW figure you need to be concerned with consists of the actual measured trailer TW when it is fully-loaded with all your supplies plus the weight of any cargo in the tow vehicle that sits behind the rear axle, such as a generator or loaded cooler. The ideal situation is that this combined total TW will fall in the middle of the system's operating range.

All WD systems work over a several-hundred-pound range of TW, but they are typically described by using their highest-compatible TW figure. For instance, the Pro Series RB3 # PS49583 works for TW up to 1000-lbs. If your actual total loaded TW is 980-lbs then you will be better off with higher-rated system. There is no retro-fit for this setup to give it a higher capacity; I confirmed with Pro Series. Instead, you could use system # C17063 which is rated up to 1400-lbs.
