Should Tire Chains be Used on All 4 Wheels of a 2016.5 Mazda CX-5 with Front Wheel Drive

Question:

I am looking at ordering PW1042 for my 2016.5 Mazda CX-5 Touring FWD, which have 225/65-17 tires. It seems like I would only order one pair, and place them on the front wheels, but Im not sure if I would also need another pair for the rear tires as well?

Helpful Expert Reply:

Tire chains or cables such as # PW1042 should go on the main drive wheels of a vehicle. Since your 2016.5 Mazda CX-5 is a front wheel drive model the chains or cables would go on the front wheels. Since the rear wheels are not drive wheels or on a steering axle there isn't much benefit to having them on the rear. Be sure to consult the vehicle owner's manual for additional information on the use of traction devices.
