Does Adding a Transmission Cooler Bypass the Factory Cooler on a 2006 Chevy Silverado

Question:

I have an 06 silverado 1500 with the 4.8 motor. I was wondering if it completely bypasses the radiator core or do both cool the trans and also do you recommend an fan cooled unit. Also is this a difficult part to install

When installing a transmission cooler like Derale # D15902, it will be installed in line with the factory cooler and not bypass it. As long as you have room somewhere in the engine compartment to mount the cooler, a powered fan cooler probably will not be necessary. There are 3 possible places to mount a cooler.

The most efficient place is in front of the A/C condenser core. Next would be between the core and radiator. And the least efficient place is between the radiator and engine. If this third place is the only option then I recommend going with a larger capacity cooler to make up for the loss in efficiency.

Installing a transmission cooler is not a difficult job, especially if you have some experiencing working on vehicles. I have included a link to our FAQ article on transmission coolers and a video showing a typical installation for you to view.
