Can Self-Adjusting Brakes be Added to a 1973 Hi-Plains Trailer

Question:

I have a 1973 Hi-Plains RV trailer made Amarillo, TX. The axle is made in Ohio but couldnt read the rest of it. Have you seen this axle before? I want to get new self adjust brakes for it but not sure what I need. The info on the drum/hubs: Max Diameter 10.040 9222 K12 W-2

That is what we would call a vintage axle but as far as the brand and other information I couldn't say. The max drum diameter makes me believe that it would take 10 x 2-1/4 inch brakes. But to be sure it is best to pull off a drum and measure the inner diameter and the width where the shoes would make contact with the drum (see picture).

Also check for a brake mounting flange welded to the axle. If not present they will have to be added by a professional welder with experience and the proper equipment to weld on brake flanges. If they are present then check the bolt pattern. The 10 x 2-1/4 inch brakes such as # AKEBRK-35-SA have a 4 bolt mounting pattern spaced 2-7/8 inches apart on center (top to bottom and side to side).
