How to Install the Draw-Tite Activator # 5504 in a 2009 Chevy Silverado 1500 with the Tow Package

Question:

I have a 2009 Chevy 1500 truck that I want to install a brake controller. The truck does have a trailer package. What adapter do I need to purchase to install the #5100 controller?

To install the Draw-Tite Activator # 5504 in your 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 you will need the Replacement Brake Control Plug-In Harness # 20127. You will then splice the following wires from the harness to the following functions on your Silverado:

Black - 12V Power
Blue - Brake Controller Pin on 7-Way
White - Ground
Red - COLD Side of Stop Light Switch (only gets hot when brake pedal is pressed)

I have attached a video of this controller being installed on a 2012 Chevy Silverado that you can use as a reference. There should be a label on the wiring harness under your driver side dash that lists what each wire is for, but if that is missing or you cannot read it you can simply use a Circuit Tester # PTW2992 to verify their functions.

You may also need to install the Pulse Preventer # 5501 to keep your brake controller from causing your trailer brakes to pulse when you have your hazards on.
