Trailer Brakes Lockup While in Reverse With Different Trailers  

Question:

I hooked up my Tundra to 2 different trailers with electric brakes. Both when I put it in reverse the trailer brakes lock up.

It sounds to me like the reverse light and brake output signal wires are touching one another. The two wires are likely shorting one another at the rear of the vehicle on the trailer connector or in the wiring harness. The first thing you will want to do is use a bit of electrical cleaner on the metal pins inside the connector followed by a thin line of dielectric grease like part # 11755.

Once the connector has been cleaned you will want to move to the rear of the connector and give each of the wires a wiggle to ensure they are secre. You will then want to trace both the brake output and reverse light signal wires back to their origin while taping any loose or broken connections with electrical tape.
