Measuring for Tire Size Upgrade on Trailer

Question:

We currently have 235/70 R16 E rated tires on 5th wheel and want to upgrade to 235/85 R16 G tires. Will that be a problem.? How do we measure if that is what we need to do?

For your higher load rated tires, the width of the tires will not change from your current 235/70R16 tires. The difference will be in the height which will slightly change the overall diameter. The 235/85R16 tires will have a diameter of 31.73 inches. You will want to make sure you have enough clearance for this slight height difference with your wheel wells or fenders to ensure clearance when the suspension is engaged. We call this movement "deflection" and a typical deflection with leaf springs at capacity is about 1-1/2 inches and a torsion axle can be as much as 4 inches.

I recommend the Westlake ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range G # LHWL410 because of their reputation and the company's warranty. They will come with a 5 year warranty and 2 years of roadside assistance 24/7 in the US, Canada, or Puerto Rico. This tire is constructed with double steel belts for increased durability and has nylon wrapped around the steel belts to prevent tread separation. These tires are rated for up to 75 mph.

If you want a tire rated for speeds of up to 81 mph, then I recommend the Taskmaster Provider ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range G # TTWPRG235R16. This tire will come with a 2 year warranty. This tire also has double steel belts and has a protective nylon layer as well.
