How to Determine When Weight Distribution Would be Needed for 2,000 lb Trailer

We recommend using a weight distribution system when the trailer weighs 50 percent or more of the vehicle weight or if the rear of the vehicle is sagging. Without knowing what your tow vehicle is it's hard for me to say if I think a 2,000 lb trailer would be near 50 percent, but if it's a full sized truck or SUV most likely you wouldn't need it. If you determine that weight distribution is needed you will need to go by the loaded tongue weight of the trailer. You can calculate the loaded tongue weight by combining the tongue weight of the trailer when loaded and ready to tow plus the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.
