Parts Needed To Add Electric Brakes & Controller To Trailer Pulled By 2007 Tacoma & Motorcycle

Question:

I want to install electric brakes, hubs and drums on a trailer I just purchased used, for use with my motorcycle as well as my Tacoma. I’ll only use brakes when pulling with my bike. I have a square plate on the axle measuring 2 7/8” center to center. I should be able to install 7” electric brakes. I haven’t measured the spindle. The trailer is a 2008. The axle company is no longer in business as far as I know . The question I have is I want to install the brake controller in my trailer not on my bike. Does the the Prodigy 2 keep a memory when power is off or will I have to open my trailer and reprogram every time I reconnect to my trailer? I may have other questions as well. I have a flat 4 plug I think I need 2 more wires.

Based on the information you sent, it sounds like you have bearing Item # L44643 for your inner and outer bearing. If this is not correct, let me know. With your current trailer setup, we only have idler hubs that fit (link attached). If you are open to changing your wheels to a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern then trailer hub and drum assembly Item # AKHD-545-2-1K would work. Electric brakes that work with this hub and drum assembly are in brake kit Item # AKEBRK-2 which includes left and right hand assemblies.

The Tekonsha Prodigy 2 trailer brake controller Item # 90885 might work for your needs. As long as the trailer is not tilting because a proportional must remain level. However, you will definitely need additional wires installed. One wire will be a power wire. You will need constant 12-volt power to save settings or each time you use the trailer you will have to reset it. You will also have to figure out how to get a brake light only wire connected from your motorcycle to your trailer. If the P2 will not work for you, another option is to use Prodigy RF Item # TK94FR. It is designed to install on the trailer and just needs a 7-way trailer connector with an active 12-volt pin.

While some "hoops to jump through", not an impossible task. Consider all these options and send me your wheels and tire sizes so that I can make some recommendations.
