How do Andersen Chain Weight Distribution Systems Compare to Spring Bar Systems

Question:

Andersen hitches. Andersen makes a Tow Trailer hitch that has no bars or pinch bar. All Donne by chains. Do you stock these? If not can you get one? Spencer Anderson gave me the number 3350. What say u?

We do not carry the Andersen weight distribution you mentioned but we do carry several others that use the more traditional spring bar setup as opposed to the chains. The general consensus on the Andersen setup is that it's very quiet compared to others and it does seem to work well but once you get over 500 lbs of tongue weight is just isn't as a effective as a spring bar type setup.

One of their big selling points is less bounce or harshness when you hit bumps due to the chain tension being applied at a different angle. Which that may be true, but with a properly set up and rated spring bar setup the "bounce" would be minimal and you would get better weight distribution. We rarely hear of bounce here from WD systems unless someone is using too high rated of a system. They are also pretty pricey too, but then again some of the nicer spring bar setups can be as well. The other downside for some might be that you have to weld the chain hangers to the trailer frame which isn't appealing to those of us who don't have a welder.

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use.

Once you know your tongue weight you will want to check out the link I attached that has all of the weight distribution systems we carry. You will be able to select your tongue weight from the filters to see what would be rated for your setup. You can also email me back with your tongue weight and I can help you pick out what I think would work best based on that.
