Recommended 3 Inch Lunette Ring Over 2-1/2 Inch Alternative

Question:

Ive been all over the web trying to understand the different applications of the 2 sizes of lunette rings available. I see the smaller 2-1/2 lunettes have much higher load capacities. If most domestic pickups are using pintles with 1-1/2inch hook then it would seem to me that 3inch lunette would have excessive slop. According to the dimensions youve mentioned on the hook, wouldnt that leave about 1-1/2inch of play? I have the adjustable channel on my trailer and wanted to convert everything to pintle so need to know which size lunettes to look at. Thanks!

The standard size lunette ring is 3 inches like the Demco Lunette Ring - Adjustable Channel Mount - 3" Diameter - Black - 25,000 lbs # DM09557-81. The 2-1/2 inch rings will not fit in the adjustable channel mounts where the vast majority of the 3 inch rings are designed for that style application. All of our pintle hooks like # C48210 are designed to work with the 3-inch lunette ring. There will be some movement, but there is not excessive slop. There needs to be some movement with this style connection so that the ring doesn't catch and bind on the hook and cause system issues.

For your application, you most definitely want to use a 3-inch lunette ring. I've attached links to both hooks and rings for your convenience.
