Is Bearing Buddy Needed If Trailer has EZ Lube Spindles
Question:
the axle protrudes 9/16 inch. beyond wheel hub flange. it there enough clearance to the piston to do any good?

What does it look like on the end of the spindle? Does it look like a grease fitting? Typically if the spindle sticks out at all it's due to a zerk/grease fitting which would mean you don't need a Bearing Buddy like part # BB1980A-SS.
You would just need to use the zerk fitting to apply the grease and you'd be good.
