With Draw-Tite Activator Vehicle Brake Lights Stay on When Vehicle is Off on 1999 Ford F-250

Question:

I have a 99 F-250 with an Activator II installed which worked fine for years. Now the trucks brake lights stay on after the truck is turned off and I have to pull the fuse out to get them off. Also, only the DOT appears on the unit when the brake is pushed. Can you help.

I can suggest a few things to check. You are getting feedback into the vehicle wiring system somehow. Closely examine your trailer connector, both the trailer and the vehicle side. Make sure there is no corrosion. If there is a small amount on the pins, there might be much more inside the connector itself.

Also, check the blue brake output wire that exits the rear of the brake controller. Using a circuit tester, like part # PTW2993, make sure you are getting around 12v when the brake override switch is activated. You will have to trace that wire all the way back through the connector to the trailer, and then to the brakes themselves, making sure you get voltage. Check for a pinched wire, or broken or missing insulation, or a loose connection.
