Brake Controller Compatible with Electric Over Hydraulic Trailer Brakes for 2009 Chevy Silverado

Question:

We have a Prodigy brake controller that we had in our 2004 F150. We recently purchaced a 2009 Chevy Silverado 2500 with the Duramax. The truck has the integrated brake controller. We have a 40 gooseneck trailer that we tow with this truck. The trailer has electronically controlled hydraulic brakes. We have since found out that the integrated controller wont work with this type of system. I would like to know if the Prodigy controller that we have will control this type of braking system and how to install it into the 2009 Silverado that we now have in place of the integrated brake controller. Thanks!

If you have the original Prodigy Brake Controller (with Red LED display), what you have is not compatible with electric over hydraulic brakes. Tekonsha upgraded the Prodigy, the new model is the P2, part # 90885 which IS compatible with electric over hydraulic brakes.

Installing the P2 would be a fairly simple proposition for you. Unlike your Ford, the Chevy will not have a connector under the dash. Above the brake pedal, look for the bundle of tow package wires with a white tag on it. Carefully cut the tow package harness away from the harness it is taped to. The wires will connect to the controller as follows: The red tow package wire connects to the black wire on the controller, the light blue tow package wire with the white stripes connects to the red wire on the controller, the white tow package wire attaches to the white wire on the controller. If there is an orange wire, tape it off and tuck it up out of the way. The dark blue wire exiting the controller will need to have a piece of 12 gauge wire like part # 12-1-1 attached to it. This wire will need to be ran through the firewall and under the vehicle to the trailer connector at the rear. Make sure to avoid any moving parts like steering or suspension components. Also avoid anything hot like the exhaust manifold, pipes or the mufflers. Running the wire along an existing wiring harness and securing it with zip ties works best. You will need to locate the dark blue wire at the back of the trailer connector at the rear bumper. Peel back some of the wire loom, and cut the blue wire approximately 6 inches back from the connector. Connect the wire you ran from the controller to the blue wire exiting the rear of the trailer connector.
