Trailer Clearance/Marker and Turn Signal Light Requirements
Question:
Is it ok to put marker lights as blinkers for each side or should they just be left as marker lights

Expert Reply:
Trailer lights do have certain requirements that can mean a specific one is not suitable for an alternate purpose.
For example, clearance lights (shown on the linked page) come in amber and red colors. Red are for rear placement and amber are for forward placement. These clearance lights are also available in many shapes including round, oval, rectangular, teardrop, beehive and others.
Tail lights, (shown on the other linked page) also serve as turn signal lights, are so typically much larger and will usually be one of the basic shapes - round, square, oval or rectangular - to make them more visible.
You can refer to the linked article on trailer lighting requirements for guidance in selecting appropriate lights for each function on your trailer. This will help you be safe and also be compliant with regulations.
