3 Bike Trunk Mounted Rack That Allows Rear Access for a 2017 Honda HRV EX
Question:
Does this model fit and work well with this model of vehicle? We are looking for a 2 or 3 bike carrier that will work as well as leaving the trunk area still accessible?

The Saris Bones 3, part # SA801BL is a confirmed fit for the 2017 Honda HRV, however, I can't recommend opening the rear hatch with the Saris Bones or any trunk rack installed. The weight of the rack can cause the hatch to either close without warning or fall off when the hatch is open, causing damage to the bikes, rack, or vehicle.
If you decide to go with the Bones I recommend a 10 foot Cable Lock, part # e98891 to improve the security of the rack and a Swagman Frame Adapter, part # 64005 to help any alternative frame bikes you may carry ride more level with the ground.
If you're looking for trunk access, I'd recommend a SeaSucker rack, either the Bomber Roof Rack, part # 298-BB3008 or the Hornet Trunk Rack, part # 298-BH1302.
The Bomber requires that all bikes carried have quick-remove or through-axle front wheels but allows for three bikes to be mounted to the roof of the vehicle without any other roof rack or bike rack purchase. This rack easily installs and removes for in-town trips and is strong enough for highway speeds.
Another variation of this rack is the Hornet Trunk Mount, which is a one bike rack that lets you carry any number of bikes on your rear window through the vacuum cup system. You will need to purchase one Hornet per bike you wish to carry, but this likely provides the best solution. Additionally, this can be removed quickly to allow brief access to the rear hatch as you need it.
I've included video of all of these racks so you can compare them for yourself.
