Parts Needed to Install 7-Way and Brake Controller in 2010 Toyota Highlander

Question:

Hello, After looking at the factory wiring diagram on the 2010 Highlander, why cant I: • Use the Curt 56217 connected in the front and back like normal. • Use a 7 pole multi tow adapter at rear of vehicle. • Run a blue wire only from the brake controller to the 7 pole plug in the back for camper brakes activation. • Ground the 7 pole connector white wire at the rear of vehicle. • Connect the brake controller white to ground under the dash. • Connect the red from the brake controller to the brake stop wire tap off of it before the Curt box. • Connect the black from the brake controller to the power wire coming into the Curt box before the fuse. • Put a 30 amp fuse into the factory box at the Towing slot. Brake controller would be protected by this. The pink wire on the Highlander forward factory plug comes straight from this 30 amp fuse. • Connect the four flat to the 7 pole adapter at rear. Thanks,

You are on the right track and for the most part you can do what you mentioned, but you can't pull power for the brake controller from the power wire for the # C56217. It's going to be to much of an amperage draw for the wire gauge used as well as it will potentially short out the converter box.

Your best option is to use the part # C56217 for the 4-way and then use the part # ETBC7 to convert it to a 7-way and install the controller. Using the stoplight wire of the # C56217 is an option but it's going to take quite a bit of wire to get it there.

A better option would be to follow the install video I attached below as it shows the ETBC7 being installed in a 2010 Highlander just like yours and it will walk you through the entire process.

For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a proportionate amount to the trailer brakes. This will be the last brake controller you buy. It can easily be transferred to future vehicles as well.
