Expert Reply:
The best engine oil cooler for your 1998 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 I6 will be the largest one you have space for in front of your radiator behind your grill as this will provide the cooler with the most airflow which will in turn create the best performance. You will want to measure this space prior to purchasing a cooler. If you have space, I recommend using the Derale Tube-Fin Engine Oil Cooler Kit w/ Sandwich Adapter part # D15502. This engine oil cooler kit has everything you will need for installation including a 20mm x 1.5mm engine oil filter thread that you will need to install the sandwich adapter. The cooler is 16-5/8" wide x 7-5/8" tall x 3/4" deep and is capable of cooling the engines oil up to 50 degrees.
If space is limited in the front of the vehicle then the best option I have for you is a remote mounted cooler like the Derale Hyper-Cool Remote Engine Cooler Kit w/ Fan part # D15660. This cooler is 13" wide x 10" tall x 5-5/8" deep with a fan to keep engine oil cool regardless of airflow or ambient temperatures. It also includes everything needed for installation in addition to the correct 20mm x 1.5mm engine oil filter thread.
