Can the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BX1682 Tow a 2002 Yukon SLT that Weighs Over 5,000 lbs

Question:

My question is in regard to Item # BX1682. The comments in you ad states not to be used in vehicles over 5000 lbs. It states it is the correct base plate for my 2002 Yukon SLT 1500 4WD which is 5400 lbs. based on my local scale and has no additional equipment that would have increased the weight. So what base plate do I need for my vehicle?

The 5,000-lb weight limit restriction that you are reading in the installation notes for the Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BX1682 says that an adapter cannot be used for vehicles over 5,000 lbs. It also states that you will want to check the weight of your model vehicle as some models exceed the 5,000-lb weight limit that the Blue Ox Kit has.

The Kit # BX1682 that you mentioned is a confirmed fit for the 2002 GMC Yukon Denali model only so it will not be compatible with your SLT model. The Base Plate Kit that is compatible with your SLT 1500 4WD is the Roadmaster XL Base Plate Kit # c. This kit utilizes the removable arm feature as well so when you are not flat towing you can keep more of an OEM look.

To finish up your flat towing setup you will also need a Tow Bar, Safety Cables, Vehicle Tow Bar Wiring, a Supplemental Braking System, and possibly a High-Low Adapter.

One of our most popular Tow Bars is the Roadmaster Falcon 2 # RM-520. I recommend this Tow Bar because of all the great reviews it has received and it is rated for 6,000 lbs so unless you put 600 lbs worth of gear in your Yukon this will work great! The Safety Cables I recommend to go with this setup are the RoadMaster 68" Single Hook, Coiled Safety Cables # RM-643 also rated at 6,000 lbs.

For Vehicle Tow Bar Wiring I recommend the Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 4-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15247 which, when installed, will give you a quick and easy way to connect and disconnect the wiring on your Yukon to the 7-Way on your RV. You will need to install a Brake Light Relay # RM-88400, and then if you have separate lighting you will need a converter # 118158 and 2 additional diodes # RM-792.

The Supplemental Braking System that I recommend going with is the SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System # SM99251. This is a one-time installation system that will activate the brakes on your Yukon at the same time and with the same intensity that you use in your RV.

Since you will most likely need a High-Low Adapter I am linking our selection of adapters for you to filter through as well as a helpful article on how to choose the correct adapter for your application.

I have also linked some example installation videos that you can use as a reference.
