Choosing a Weight Distribution System for a 2014 Ford Explorer
Question:
Hello! I have a 2014 Ford Explorer Limited - Class III hitch was factory installed and will be towing a 2017 Forest River R-pod 180, dry weight approx. 3,000 lbs and hitch weight approx. 350 lbs. I currently have a Reese 83660 sway bar that has not been installed, but would like to add weight distribution as well. I was looking at the blue ox Weight Distribution System with Shank - Round Bar - 10,000 lbs GTW, 600 lbs TW Item # Blu45fr Would this system be appropriate for my set-up? Thanks!

The Blue Ox Weight Distribution System with Shank part # BLU45FR is an excellent weight distribution system. As long as your total tongue weight is under 600 lbs. and your trailer hitch is rated for use with a weight distribution system then it will work well for you.
In order to be sure you are choose the correct weight distribution system, you will want to find the total tongue weight of your towing setup by adding the tongue weight of both your loaded and ready to tow trailer and any cargo stored behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.
The average total tongue weight (TW) rating of a trailer is typically 10-15% of the gross trailer weight (GTW). An easy way to find this would involve using a tongue weight scale like the etrailer Tongue Weight Scale for Campers and Utility Trailers - 2,000-lb Capacity # e99044. When choosing a weight distribution system, you will want your total tongue weight to fall in the middle of the weight distribution's weight capacity. For example, the ideal weight distribution system for a total tongue weight of 600 lbs. is one that is rated for 400-800 lbs. of tongue weight.
I have attached a few weight distribution help articles in addition to a review video of the Blue Ox Weight Distribution System for you.
