Recommended Weight Distribution System for Trailer with 3,790 Pound Gross Weight
Question:
I have a 2017 Tacoma double cab long bed, towing capacity 6500 lbs. I will be towing a Starcraft Comet Mini Extreme 18 DS trailer, dry weight 3221 lbs, gross rate 3790 lbs, dry hitch weight 325 lbs. What weight distribution hitch with sway control do you recommend? Thanks

When picking out a weight distribution system, the most important factor to consider is the total tongue weight of your towing setup. This will include both the loaded tongue weight (as if loaded and ready for a trip) of your trailer, along with any added cargo weight coming from behind the rear axle of your Tacoma. Ideally, this number should fall somewhere near the middle of the chosen system's operating range.
You mentioned in your question that the Starcraft Comet Mini Extreme Trailer has a dry hitch/tongue weight of 325 pounds. I recommend verifying its tongue weight when it is fully loaded with a scale like the etrailer # e98874. Using the 3,790-pound gross weight of the trailer, we can estimate its loaded tongue weight, as the tongue weight should be between 10-15% of its total weight. This will give us an estimated loaded tongue weight of 379 to 570 pounds, remembering to leave a little wiggle room for any added cargo weight coming from behind the rear axle of your truck.
With this tongue weight range in mind, I recommend looking at the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System # EQ37060ET, which has a tongue weight capacity of 200-600 pounds. This system will do a great job of evenly distributing weight over the axles of both your truck and trailer for added stability and control. It features an excellent integrated 4-Point Sway Control system that will limit side-to-side movement of the trailer and keep everything in line.
I have attached a video demonstration on this particular system for you to check out. I have also included an article on weight distribution systems that you might find helpful.
