Flat Towing a 1990 Suzuki Samurai With Separate Tail Light Wiring
Question:
I purchased a 1990 Suzuki Samurai that has been previously wired for towing behind an RV. It is a butcher job and I will be removing it and all its splices into the OEM tail light housings and wiring. I am installing all new OEM tail light housings which will restore me to OEM original. All the above said, my 2009 Explorer has the stock OEM 4 flat out connector at rear bumper. I works perfect with my boat trailer incandescent lights and my utility trailer led lights...performing tail, stop and turn signal functions. My trailer harnesses are the standard 4 wire flat white ~ to ground, yellow for left stop/turn signal , green for right stop/turn signal and brown for tail light signal. A single 4057 bulb 2 elements performs all the functions in the Explorer tail light housing. One element performs the tail light function and the other element performs both the stop and turn signal function. On the Samurai, a single 1057 bulb with 2 elements performs the stop and tail light functions, a single 1056 bulb 1 element performs the turn signal function and another single 1056 bulb performs the back up light function I do not need this function when in TOAD. There is a separate wire for each element in ALL bulbs. NOTE: I have a disconnect on my Samurai battery ground AND when in TOAD, the battery ground is not connected making it impossible for any voltage source to reach the battery. When in TOAD any voltage signal via wire to any of the bulbs from the TOW vehicle via the TOAD harness an only travel to an OPEN control device on the Samurai. FOR example, the stop light signal cannot pass through the OPEN brake light switch. Same goes for the tail light wire going to the OPEN tail/headlight switch and the turn signal wire going to the OPEN turn signal switch. I see no need for any DIODE protection when the Samurai battery is disconnected AND all control devices are in a OPEN OFF position. Now for the issue. How to wire the 4 flat white, green, yellow, brown harness wire signals from the TOW vehicle to the TOAD wires in the tail light housings. FYI: Samurai wire color codes: Green/Yellow to the single element 1056 bulbs for TURN SIGNAL left and right. Green/White to one of the dual elements in the dual element 1057s left and right. Red/Blue to the other element in the dual element 1057s left and right. I want to leave the option open to update from incandescent bulbs to led bulbs in the future. Appears I need something that will split the stop/turn signal from the TOW vehicle into 2 wires to run the separate stop and turn elements in the 1056 and 1057 bulbs of the TOAD. I hope this is possible!

The long and short of it is your 1990 Suzuki Samurai has turn signals and brake lights on a different circuit. This is a common issue when flat towing, and the solution for you is going to be using the 6-Diode Universal Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles with Separate Lighting # 154-792-118158, which has the converter you'll need to wire.
Please look at the help article I've attached on wiring a dinghy and follow the second procedure. This will outline all the steps you will need to take to get the lights on your Samurai to function when it is being towed. I've also added a link to an example install of the wiring kit for you to take a look at.
