Recommended 2-Bike Hitch Racks for Class I Hitch on Flat-Towed 2016 Ford Focus

Question:

We currently have RV and we flat tow 2016 Ford Focus. I have just purchased hitch frame for Ford Focus so we can place bike rack to carry 2 bikes. Now I am looking for bike rack. I notice Thule states DO NOT USE bike rack on trailers or towed vehicles. Do you know which bike racks are recommended to use on towed vehicle?

We can help you with a 2-bike hitch rack that will be fine to use on the back of your flat-towed 2016 Ford Focus.

This vehicle can be fitted only with a light-duty 1-1/4-inch Class I hitch. No other hitch sizes or classes are offered for the Focus since its frame is not strong enough to handle bigger hitches.

So this means we need to find you a Class I-compatible rack that is also rated for use on an RV, which in terms of the physics involved, is the functional equivalent of being installed at the back of a towed car.

I recommend the Curt # C18085 2-bike rack. The Curt is a wheel-mount racks that suspend the bikes from their wheels. This means no contact with the bike frames or cables, which many people prefer.

The Curt weights only 45 pounds yet offers a substantial 45-lbs-per-bike weight capacity. This rack is usable on any trailer or vehicle and it fits both 1-1/4-inch and 2-inch hitches. A great value and a solid all-around performer.

With this rack you can lock it to your hitch using hitch lock kit # e98879 and you can lock your bikes to the rack using a cable lock such as # e98891.
