Installing Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Brake Controller For Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator Compatibility
Question:
Can you tell me what happens WITHIN the P3 brake controller when the mode is changed from Electric to Electric Over Hydraulic? I have Dexter Electric Over Hydraulic disc brakes on my tri-axle Airstream. And, I have an old Brakesmart unit that is failing where the display is fading out and I need to replace it soon. For now, it still works even though I cant see the display or change the settings.

The Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 4 Axles - Proportional # 90195 has an electric over hydraulic mode. I reached out to the manufacturer and it actually changes the diagnostics internally. The setting gives voltage and also increases the amperage so the time the actuator gets signal is faster. This accounts for a stopping time closer to the actual time you hit the brake pedal accounting for the actuator functional timing.
To setup this function, press the menu/options button. Then, on the SETUP screen, scroll down to brake type and press OK when Hydraulic is highlighted. It will then ask you to confirm. At this point, in the lower left hand of the display, there should be an H, for Hydraulic. This procedure is outlined on page 4 of the installation instructions, which I have linked for you in case you do not have them handy.
