I spoke with my contact at Thule regarding the Summit Cargo Box. Whether or not it will fit onto the factory crossbars on your 2006 Subaru Outback will actually depend on the specific version you are looking to get.
The version of the Summit Cargo Box that was manufactured after 1998 includes hardware that is compatible with crossbars as wide as 3-1/2 inches. As long as the crossbars on your Outback Wagon are less than 3-1/2 inches wide, this version of the Summit will work great.
If the cargo box was instead manufactured prior to 1998, it will include hardware that is designed only to fit Thule square bar crossbars. For this particular model, there is no mounting hardware available that will allow it to fit the factory crossbars on your vehicle.
