You will want to start off by testing the pins on the connectors both for your 2007 Jeep Patriot and your trailer to make sure that they are wired correctly.
To test the functions of the pins for the connector on your Jeep you will want to use a Circuit Tester # PTW2992 and test each pin while a buddy activates the different functions. You will then want to test your trailer connector by using a 12V power source, like your Jeep's battery, and make sure that each pin activates the correct function. I have attached some pictures that demonstrate what the pin functions should be for both a 4-Pole and a 7-Way on the trailer side.
If you test each function and they are correct and they match up then you will want to check the connectors for any corrosion or wires that might be touching. Clean any corrosion and isolate the wires away from each other if they are touching. You can use Dielectric Grease # 11755 on the connectors to help protect them against corrosion and water damage as well.
If you are still experiencing issues then you will want to check all of your grounds to make sure that they are secure to a clean, bare metal surface.
Let me know if you are still experiencing issues and I will help you troubleshoot further.
