Can a Wheelchair be Safely Secured and Transported Long Distances on a Curt Cargo Carrier
Question:
I need a carrier for one light weight wheelchair, I do not need a ramp. Would the low side rails be enough to strap it down? Or is there some other accessory I would additionally need. Plan on driving from Iowa to florida in the winter are there wheelchair covers?

24x60 Curt Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches - Steel - 500 lbs Item # C18152 will work great to carry a wheelchair. As long as you tie down the chair to the carrier the low side rails will not be a problem. Just use Erickson Re-Tractable Ratchet Straps w/ Push Button Releases - 2" x 10' - 1,100 lbs - # EM34416 and that chair won't budge!
This carrier is designed to fit a 2 inch receiver opening. If you have a 1-1/4 inch opening I recommend 17x46 Curt Cargo Carrier for 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Steel - 500 lbs # C18145. I have included links to video reviews on both of these carriers and the straps for you. note: If used on a 1-1/4" hitch, the capacity is only 300 pounds and not 500 pounds.
There may be wheelchair covers out there but we do not have any. If you cannot find one then I recommend using a small tarp (the smallest we have is 5 x 7 feet # EM56999 ) to wrap around the chair and then use bungee cords such as # EM06623 to keep the tarp tight around the chair. You do not want the tarp to be able to flap around much while driving because that can damage it. The vehicle will block most of the wind though so just make sure it is tightly wrapped
