Weight Distribution/Sway Control System for 30-Foot Camper Trailer with 635-lbs Dry Hitch Weight

Question:

I have a 2017 Toyota Tundra SR5 Crew Max 4x4, maximum tongue weight is 980lbs. I have a 2017 30foot camper trailer. The unloaded camper weight is 5,425lbs., the gross weight is 7,000lbs., the dry hitch weight is 635lbs. I will be adding approximately 400-500lbs. of camping gear. What type of weight distribution/anti-sway system do you recommend? Thanks!

The increase in trailer tongue weight (TW) between a dry/unloaded state and a fully-loaded road-ready state is hard to predict exactly because of the different ways that your 400- to 500-lbs of gear can be loaded. The best way to go in selecting your weight distribution/sway control system is to load the trailer exactly as you will do when heading out on a trip, with water and propane tanks filled, sporting equipment in place, (beer loaded!) along with all your other items.

Now you can use a TW scale # e99044 to measure that actual loaded TW. To this you will add the weight of any cargo items that sit behind the Tundra's rear axle, such as a big loaded cooler or generator. This cargo will appear as TW to the weight distribution set-up so it must be accounted for. Based on your trailer specs (thank you!) I think a reasonable estimate for your trailer's loaded TW is in the 800-lb range. Ideally your total TW figure will fall in the middle of the system's operating range. All WD/SC work well over a range of TW.

With your total TW known you can use the linked page to review suitable systems. Click on your TW figure (we'll use 800-lbs) and you'll see systems such as the Equal-i-zer # EQ37100ET which provides both effective weight shift and sway prevention for trailers with a TW from 600- to 1000-lbs. I like the Equal-I-zer systems because they are all-inclusive and because they use narrower frame brackets that are much easier to position on many trailer frames. You can rest assured this specific system will work well for you.
